The Book Bank - Children's Books for Classroom Libraries
Host A Children's Book Drive to Stock the Book Bank
We're recruiting companies, community groups, youth groups and individuals to host a children's book drive to stock the Book Bank. The Book Bank recycles these new and gently-used books directly into the hands of teachers for their classroom libraries. Because of budget cuts, funds for classroom libraries have been drastically reduced. The Book Bank -- modeled on an actual book store -- but free of charge -- makes these gently-used children's books available to Philadelphia teachers in public, private, charter, parochial and community schools.
It's easy to host a Book Drive:
- We’ll send you our tool kit of information and materials on how to run a successful drive!
- Collect new and gently-used books for students in pre-school to 8th grade
Record Children's Books on CD/Tape
Want to express your dramatic voice and promote children's literacy?
We're recruiting volunteers to record children's picture books on tape. Each book and CD or tape are shelved in the Book Bank and available for teachers -- free of charge -- for their classrooms. Volunteers are welcome to record these dramatic readings together! Children love hearing more than one voice on a tape as they follow along in the book.
Teachers, Retired Teachers, Children’s Librarians, Retired Librarians, Education Majors, Children’s Literature Majors, Library Science Majors
- Sort and shelve gently-used books. Volunteer hours:Tuesdays 11 am to 3 pm. Wednesdays: 11 am to 2:30 pm.lunteer hours:
- Assist teachers during Book Bank teacher hours. Volunteer hours: Wednesdays 2:30 - 5:30 pm..
Pick-Up Books Collected at Book Drive Sites
Pick up boxes of gently-used books at book drive sites in Philadelphia, and deliver to Book Bank at MLK High School. Hours: Tuesdays and Wednesdays 11 am to 2 pm. Requires a valid drivers license and ability to lift boxes of books.
Philadelphia Reading Olympics - College Locations in Philadelphia
Want to be part of the largest Jeopardy-style reading competition in Philadelphia? We're recruiting volunteers to moderate and keep score at this seven-day event held in May at local colleges. Volunteers are needed to serves as moderators and scorekeepers for the event.
