Are You the Real MVP?
Not sure if the answer to the above question is yes? Let me tell you how you can become the next Reading MVP at Summer READS, our academic program that focuses on eliminating summer learning loss through 6 weeks of academic instruction. Last year, 86% of our children improved in their literacy skill development which is a great accomplishment considering that when children are not engaged in a quality learning program over the summer months, they lose 2-3 months of what they have learned over the school year.
Each morning at Summer READS, the children, staff, and parents gather for our morning circle time known as Harambee. Harambee is Kiswahili for “let’s pull together.” This is an important part of our daily routine as it is purposed to get everyone at the site on a positive path and fair start for the day. Harambee consists of chants, cheers, affirmations, and guest readers! And that’s when you are coming in and becoming our Most Value Player.
You are invited to join the children of the Summer READS programs at Hackett and Sharswood Elementary School Communities this summer as a guest reader on a day of your choice between July 11th and August 12th. You will have an approximate 5-7 minute time slot, which includes an introduction (please submit a short bio that you would like read to introduce you), reading of your selected story, and then a moment for questions and answers from the children. We ask that you would arrive by 8:30 and we will get you on your way by 9:15!
The 2016 Summer READS theme is “I Am A Champion.” What greater way to show our children that they are champions than supporting their efforts to be academically successful! During this time, we ask that you would bring either a favorite children’s picture book or one can be selected for you to read aloud. If appropriate, you are invited to ask some children to act out the story as you read aloud. We encourage you to be as theatrical and creative in your reading as you desire in order to keep the children engaged.
