Sample Questions – Middle School Level

The questions asked at the competition are very straightforward, factual questions.  They usually relate to the plot, characters or setting and the answers are easily provable.

To get you started, here are some sample questions (with answers below) from this year’s booklist.   These samples are meant to give you an idea of the type of question that will be asked.  All questions begin:  “In the book,” followed by the book title.

  1. In the book, One Crazy Summer, whom did Fern write and recite a poem about at the rally?

(Crazy Kelvin)

  1. In the book Rodzina, what was in the sandwiches that the orphans were repeatedly given to eat?

(Jelly sandwiches)

  1. In the book, Rodzina, what was Rodzina wearing that had belonged to her father?

(His boots)

  1. In the book Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin, what did the trolls eat as food?

(Sludge; a muddy liquid with worms in it)

(A girl named Red)

  1. In the book, Starry River of the Sky, Rendi finally realizes that Madame Chang is one of the characters in her stories. Who is she?

(The Moon Lady)

  1. In the book, Starry River of the Sky, Rendi’s father had asked his two children to solve three riddles. How many could they solve?

(Two riddles, Rendi solved one and his sister solved one)

  1. In the book Ungifted, how does Noah’s You Tube Video help Dr. Schultz find Donovan?

(The video shows Donovan operating the robot.)

  1. In the book, Gregor the Overlander, who is Boots?

(Gregor’s baby sister)

(Humans and bats bond to protect each other and swear to keep each other alive)

(He goes to his Uncle Frankie’s diner; Accept: to the diner)

(He calls her Cool Girl)

  1. In the book, Counting By 7s, why did the Nguyen family and Willow move into Dell Duke’s apartment?

(Because the social worker was coming to check on Willow’s living arrangements and they thought it would be better to be living in an apartment rather than in a garage)

  1. In the book, Counting By 7s, what advice did Willow give to the taxi cab driver, Jairo Hernandez, the first time she met him?

(“Never let someone tell you that you can’t do it.”)

  1. In the book, Counting By 7s, after hearing Willow’s advice what did Jairo Hernandez do?

(Got information from the local college about continuing education programs)

  1. In the book, Bomb: The Race to Build – and Steal- the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon, what does the “U” in “U-bomb” stand for?

(The U is short for Uranium)
