Each year, since 2006, 4th-8th grade students from all over Philadelphia have formed teams to collectively read the 20 books on the Philadelphia Reading Olympics book list in order to attend the May competition.
READING OLYMPICS by the numbers: 1612 students from 120 public, private and parochial schools formed 151 teams to compete in the 2010 Philadelphia Reading Olympics. The 211 volunteers included teams from American Executive Centers, Goldman Sachs, KPMG, Lutheran Theological Seminary, US Airways, Vanguard and Wachovia Bank
"Last year three of my students were on our school's Reading Olympics team Two of them would hide their books inside their desks -- they thought I didn't know! They took their books to lunch, and wanted to read all the time Talk about a teacher's dream It was the first year our school entered the competition, and the team came in second They were so excited, and everyone crowded around them when they came back, like they were Olympic stars Well, they were! And to make it even sweeter, two of them scored proficient on the reading PSSA, and one scored advanced."
